Today, sleep apnea is a common problem that many people face. Sleep is a vital part of a healthy life when the body enters a phase of complete rest. Sleep apnea is more than just snoring and is defined as a temporary cessation of breathing for at least 10 seconds during sleep. This can occur frequently throughout the night. During sleep apnea, there is an effort to breathe, and after a while, the brain is aroused, and the airway reopens. The person resumes breathing with a loud snore.

People with sleep apnea can't get a proper night's sleep. Therefore, they experience various complaints beyond temporary breathing pauses during sleep. One of the most significant issues is waking up feeling tired in the morning. No matter how many hours they sleep, they wake up feeling groggy. Their loud snoring can disturb those around them. The quality of their sleep is disrupted, leading to daytime drowsiness. They may have trouble concentrating on tasks, resulting in decreased work performance. One of the most crucial problems for these individuals is the risk of falling asleep at the wheel, increasing the risk of traffic accidents due to drowsiness. Additionally, sleep apnea can lead to systemic diseases like heart problems and high blood pressure due to the increased stress on the heart during apnea events.

There are many factors that can contribute to this condition, with excessive weight being one of the most significant factors. It is more commonly seen in individuals who are overweight. Additionally, various anatomical factors can lead to the obstruction of the airway, such as nasal bone deformities, adenoid or tonsil enlargement, and masses that block the throat or nose. The primary step in evaluating a person suspected of sleep apnea is to conduct a detailed ear, nose, and throat examination to identify any pathologies that could narrow the airway. Subsequently, these individuals undergo a sleep study to determine the severity of apnea and establish treatment strategies. In this condition, the most preventable risk factor is excessive weight. Those who suffer from sleep apnea should make an effort to lose excess weight if they are overweight. Depending on the results of the sleep study, surgical procedures can correct pathologies that obstruct the airway in cases of mild to moderate sleep apnea. In severe cases, special devices are used to keep the airway open continuously, aiming to alleviate the symptoms.
